This position requires you to declare any unspent convictions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemptions Order 1975), where prompted to do so within in the application process.

You are not required to disclose any spent convictions.

The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for this post.

We are looking to recruit a Benefits Officer within the Benefits Section dealing with the assessment of Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support and Emergency Assistance.

The posts are advertised as based in Delamere House, Crewe but applicants could be based at Macclesfield Town Hall if preferred as the team is split over both locations.

Duties will include :

  • Assessment of Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support & Emergency Assistance claims
  • Identifying and recovering overpaid Housing Benefit
  • Promoting take up of all state benefits, giving advice and guidance to the public
  • Maintaining accurate and complete records using the Northgate Revs & Bens system & Info Work document management system
  • Visiting customers in their homes, at other offices of the Council or at other organisations
  • Courteously, efficiently, confidentially and sensitively dealing with enquiries, on the telephone, face to face, by email or in writing, and providing assistance on complex issues to officers from the Customer Service Points and Contact Centres and if appropriate conduct interviews with the customer.
  • Working with partner organisations, including Job Centre Plus and Pensions Service and other voluntary organisations, co-
  • ordinating joint visits where appropriate

  • Being aware of the potential for fraud and promptly reporting suspicions to the DWP fraud team for investigation
  • Working within the Data Protection, Freedom of Information and Health and Safety regulations, and having regard to the requirements of Equality and Diversity
  • You should have a NVQ level 3 or equivalent in a professional area or have a willingness to study, experience of working in a Benefits environment, knowledge of Housing Benefit & Council Tax Support legislation, a high level of literacy and numeracy and excellent knowledge of Microsoft office.

    The work will entail telephoning customers in connection with their applications so excellent customer service skills are essential.

    You should have the ability to exercise sound technical judgement and to distinguish between routine and more complex issues.
