The Galloway Glens Black Grouse Project Officer (PO) is an exciting new post funded through Galloway Glens HLF programme to develop and produce habitat management plans to create optimum habitat for black grouse at key sites in the Galloway Glens area.
The PO will also work to promote the species and this important work to key land managers, local people and visitors. Black grouse is an iconic species of high conservation priority, both in the area and nationally, and is a priority species for action in the Galloway and South Ayrshire Biosphere (G&SAB).
In recent decades the population of black grouse in the area has declined with forest canopy closure, but targeted restructuring and enhanced management now offers the opportunity to benefit this important species and thereby deliver outputs in key strategies including the Scottish, UK and Local Biodiversity Action Plans, G&SAB Natural Heritage Plan and the recently launched Southern Scotland Black Grouse Conservation Strategy.
This project will be working in close liaison with Forest Enterprise in Galloway Forest Park, drawing-up management plans to guide maintenance and enhancement of habitat to maximise benefits to black grouse in the area.
This role is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. You will be asked to declare unspent convictions and cautions at offer of employment stage.
