Our Team

The Communication Systems Team is responsible for delivering embedded software and networking solutions that customers use for a variety of communication challenges such as connecting vehicles and motorsport telemetry systems.

The key strength of the team is its ability to create high-performance solutions for a diverse range of applications ranging from transport to medical.

You will be responsible for developing solutions and planning the execution path to deliver into specific systems and products.

You will collaborate with teams including Hardware, Electronic Systems, Business Development and Quality.

The Role :

As a Principal Engineer within the Communication Systms team you will architect solutions and curate the technology roadmap for communication systems software, keeping the business at the forefront of industry trends.

You will provide technical authority and contribute to the planning and implementation of projects, bids and proposals. You will be responsible for the technical leadership across all communications systems and will operate as the domain expert to drive engineering best practices across all MAT business units.

You will assist with integrating communication products and IP into other domains within MAT, and will foster links to other technical disciplines across the business.

You will proactively lead knowledge dissemintation by being a technology evangelist and you will be recognised as an expert in your own function within the organisation.

Key Responsiblities :

  • Lead in solution architecting and ensure deliverables are on target to meet long-term business goals
  • Interprets internal / external business issues and recommends solutions / best practices.
  • Introduce radical improvements to business processes, where appropriate.
  • Lead research from a basic concept through to a feasibility proof. Lead development into new technical areas, generating IP as appropriate and where appropriate, support the customer on site during the initial roll-out.
  • Define technology based critical success factors, provides high-level direction and significant input to proposals.
  • Direct time ensuring optimal use of skills and experience in providing most value to the business.
  • Lead disruptive change to a positive outcome, using sound engineering principles; ability to think outside of the box
  • Product owner responsibility as agreed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Finding and utilising the right technologies and managing risk.
  • Contribute to policy on safety issues and overall champions safe working practices.
  • Assesses new products, clients and markets, alongside Chief Engineers, representing the company externally in a thought leadership capacity.
  • Develop and deliver complex systems. Plan and execute adoption of new techniques across the business and disseminate knowledge.
  • Requirements :

    First class degree or upper 2nd in Engineering, Electronics, Mathematics, Operational Research, Computer Science, or other highly quantitative field (or equivalent experience).

    Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience :

  • Strong analytical and numerical skills.
  • Aptitude in (one or more of the following) :
  • Networking telco engineering, protocols, authentication mechanisms
  • Linux : network stack (traffic control, IP route, netfilter), kernel development
  • Wireless & RF
  • Software prototyping & testing; virtualisation & containers; monitoring & reporting.
  • Significant technical knowledge in areas of expertise.

    You will be based in Woking Town centre with access to the world-renowned McLaren Technology Centre

    The Recruitment Process

  • If your application is successful, you’ll be invited for a phone interview with one of our experienced technical recruiters.
  • If our recruiter believes you’re suitable for the role, you will then be invited for a phone interview with senior members from the engineering team which will last approximately 30 minutes.
  • The final stage includes a face to face interview at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey. This is usually with the Hiring Manager, and a Senior Engineer or a Team Leader.
  • The interview will involve a series of skills based technical questions and problem solving or design challenges.
