The NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at GSTFT and KCL
The NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at GSTFT and KCL has recently been awarded a further £64.4m over the period 2017-
2022 as part of the Department of Health’s strategy for Research & Development to deliver world class translational research to benefit the health and wealth of the nation.
The first BRC award from April 2007-2012 allowed us to establish state of the art research infrastructure including the development of an Experimental Medicine Hub at Guy’s Hospital.
The BRC’s research is strategically integrated and managed by five Research Clusters :
and Women’s & Children’s Health.
The Experimental Medicine Hub houses state of the art facilities for the delivery of translational research and includes the BRC / R&D Department Management offices, Clinical Research Network for South London, and King’s Health Partners’ Clinical Trials Office, and the Translational Bioinformatics Research Platform creating a one stop shop for researchers, as well as the CRF at Guy’s, the Immune Monitoring Research Platform, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Cell Therapy Suite and Genomics Research Platform, as well as the GMP Pharmacy, the Assisted Conception Unit with a GMP stem cell suite, and BRC Imaging Core.
The state of the art BRC Flow Cytometry Core at Guys Hospital London has an opening for a Senior Flow Cytometry Technician on a one year contract (cover).
Our team of 8 colleagues serves internal as well as external customers on a total of 16 analysers and sorters, including BD ARIA sorters, CANTO and Fortessa analysers and platforms for very high parameter fluorescent flow (BD Symphony) as well as liquid Mass Cytometry (HELIOS) and Imaging Mass Cytometry (Hyperion).
As our new team member you will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of one or more core lab instruments for cell sorting and / or analysis and provide support to users at all levels.
Prior knowledge and hands on experience of either one of these two areas will be essential to allow quick engagement in our service : (1) Operation of BD ARIA sorters and analysers with good knowledge of DIVA software, rules of multicolour Flow Cytometry (panel design, titration, cocktailing, controls etc) or (2) Mass cytometry with the ability to operate a HELIOS mass cytometer, ideally with experience in antibody tagging.
We will provide additional training when needed, so this opening can provide you with a great opportunity to expand your skill in cytometry.
You will be educated to postgraduate level, a PhD is desirable but not essential. You will have a background in cell biology / immunology, ideally with a working knowledge in chronic inflammatory diseases or cancer immunology.
You will know how to design, conduct and analyse functional cell assays such as (but not limited to) phosphoflow, intracellular staining or tetramer binding and be well versed in PBMC preparation and cell and tissue culture.
Good knowledge and practical skills of histology / immunohistochemistry staining procedures to support our Imaging Mass Cytometry service would be an added bonus.
You will be able to work independently and as part of a team and are used to deliver results in a fast paced multiuser environment.
Good organization, communication and a positive attitude to deliver excellent customer service are essential as you will interact with a multidisciplinary customer base of clinicians and researchers.
You will be involved in scheduling, supporting data analysis, data management, instrument maintenance and quality control, ordering of supplies and providing general support for the seamless operation of the facility.
You are detail oriented and motivated to learn. Computer competency in standard office and flow cytometry software such as FlowJo or DIVA is a must, prior work experience in a flow cytometry core laboratory is highly desirable.
